Listen

Following the success of the first instalment of the EFL Round Table last December, the League of 72 called upon JMP’s services to produce two more episodes previewing the season’s run-in.

The first edition featured host David Prutton, former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, as well as four supporters from select Championship clubs.

This time, we were tasked with shooting two debates. The first would see Prutton return, whilst welcoming Sky Sports EFL pundits Don Goodman and Sam Parkin, as well as six fans debating who would be the lucky four to finish in the final Play-Off places.

Following that, Prutton, Goodman, and Parkin would be joined by supporters of Middlesbrough and Sheffield United to deliberate over who would join Burnley and be promoted to the Premier League.

Create

Given that the first episode we recorded would involve nine people on camera, the format of having them all sitting around a round table had to be re-invented.

At the scene of the original Dragons Den recordings, we lined up three sofas, rotated to keep an element of conversation and equality, whilst ensuring every participant was clearly visible on camera.

Talking points and a running order had been decided with host Prutton in a pre-production meeting the week prior, as we covered off all relevant topics.

The second recording saw the sofas swapped with chairs, as the two supporters compared stars Iliman Ndiaye and Chuba Akpom, as well as managers Paul Heckingbottom and Michael Carrick, with the guests providing unbiased analysis where appropriate.

Alongside this, we filmed games with all the supporters to provide the cline with bonus short content. These included unpopular opinions, and lucky dip quickfire questions.

Crew-wise, we had three camera operators and producers present, a sound operator, director, photographer, and runner.

Deliver

The two videos to be uploaded to Youtube came as a 40-minute Play-Off episode, and a 28-minute automatic promotion edition.

On top of these, we produced five other deliveries for each, including videos tailored for Twitter, Instagram Reels, and EFL expert Gabriel Sutton to share with his audience.

The short previews excelled on social media, with one segment our team selected attracting an audience of 340,000, with fans replying and getting involved with the discussion on Twitter.

What We Say

“Following the success of the first episode, it was brilliant to return with a second instalment of the EFL Debate looking ahead to the season’s finale in the Championship.

“Having one host, two guests, and eight football supporters spread across three productions provided its challenges, but I was really happy with the end product. We really made the most of the day, and with it being the first job I’d produced for the League of 72 it was a special one personally too!

“Pre production meetings ensured everyone knew what their roles were on the day, and all the talking points were finalised. Our camera ops did a great job of utilising the facility, giving it a real Dragons Den feel at times with the lift scene!

“David hosted a brilliant discussion which all of the guests contributed a great deal too, and we delivered some high quality productions in a short turn around.”
