This month marks the two-year milestone for JMP’s Senior Video Editor, Mike Hughes. Looking back on his time at JMP, Mike shares his growth as a storyteller, his love for music and documentaries, and some favourite moments…
“I would say that Remember the Rovers was a special edit for me as it was a privilege to tell the story of Tony Parkes, and the feedback from Natalie, his daughter, was really lovely.”
“Storytelling is more than creating videos; it’s about honouring real stories and connecting the audiences to them, which starts with us”
“I would say that developing the creative idea before going into the edit has evolved. Making sure that we all think more creatively about what the edit will look and sound like before production – it’s something that I’ve always wanted to improve.”
”We work really well together. Everyone is able to put forward ideas and make their own impact on projects, with their own individual style, whether it’s coming up with the background questions and research for an interview or having a different perspective on the style for the edit, it’s all valuable learning for each of us.”
“I love music, and there is something really satisfying about finding the right track to fit a project. Sometimes it can be really challenging to find, but it really can make or break an edit in my opinion.”
“I’m quite keen to improve my sound design, especially with more emotive edits. The right sound can have a huge impact with the visuals and further elevate great shots.”
“I would love to work on another documentary. I find that it’s a great way to tell a story, and it requires a massive range in skill set from planning to creative to storytelling to sound design and grade.”

Here’s to many more years of storytelling!
